Origin of Mothers Day The origins of Mother's Day can be traced back to the era of ancient Greece and The Romans. An ancient spring festival dedicated to maternal goddesses was celebrated by the Greeks, while the Ancient Romans, too, celebrated a spring festival, called Hilaria dedicated to Cybele, a mother goddess.
Early Christians celebrated a Mother's Day of sorts during the festival on the fourth Sunday of Lent when honouring the Virgin Mary, the Mother of Christ. When the holiday was expanded to include all mothers in England, it was then called Mothering Sunday.
Mother’s Day as we know it today - celebrated in Australia, the US and many other countries around the world- has a more recent history. Anna Jarvis is generally considered the founder of Mother’s Day. Anna Jarvis got the inspiration of celebrating Mothers Day from her own mother Mrs Anna Marie Reeves Jarvis. Anna used to express her desire that someday all children would honour and show more respect to their mothers, living and dead, and pay tribute to the contributions made by them. Anna along with many supporters wrote to those in positions of power, lobbying for the official recognition of Mothers Day. On May 8 1914, the second Sunday in May was designated as Mothers Day by the then US President, Woodrow Wilson.
